During outdoor rec, I make small talk with a couple of the women from SAA: Henderson, Schoener, and Wetzel—a pill-popping regular that must’ve transferred in from C-block along with my new buddy, Mulligan.

“How’s the new cellie, Rogers?” Schoener jabs with a snicker.

“Quiet.”

“Ah, the quiet ones are usually the most problematic.”

“Yeah, she probably has a strap-on fetish or some shit like that. Wants to ‘get to know’ ya,” says Henderson. The women cackle, and I almost do, too, but Wetzel’s question leaves me on edge, so I don’t.

“You worried she’s gonna rat on ya?”

“She doesn’t know shit.”

“Not yet, but you won’t be able to fish with her breathing down your neck,” Schoener warns. “You’ve got customers to please.”

“I’ll bring her up to speed. It’ll be fine.”

“Yeah, good luck with that,” she mutters.

It’s then that I realize Mulligan isn’t outside, that her absence probably means she’s up to no good. “Chat later,” I say, pushing my way through the group and speed-walking toward the door. I scan my wristband and shuffle quickly back to the unit, stopping abruptly when I reach the pod.

Our cell is closed.

Which can only mean one thing: she’s in there.

I stand behind a support beam in the day room and peer through the door, watching as she rummages through my stuff. She’s frantic, looking under my mattress, then hers, and dropping them back down in a huff as she tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She probes every cubby—not that there are many—and crevice she can find, and she does it quickly, as if she knows I’m coming.

She’s looking for something she seems to already know is there.

“The quiet ones are usually the most problematic.”

It’s clear then, why she’s here and why I’m being forced to share living space with her: she’s a plant. A looky-loo with a hidden agenda.

She’s here to find the stash.

And that means my fishing privileges may very well be going out the window.

Because now I have no choice but to put her ass in medical.
